Chinese Cat's Claw
The Chinese Cat’s Claw grows up to 100 feet tall and is covered in thorns. Besides the Amazon rainforest, other varieties of this plant grows in tropical areas of South America and Central America, with Peru being the leading supplier of cat’s claw to the United States.
Cat’s claw gets its name from the claw-like thorns on its stem. There are 34 reported species of Uncaria and it is widely believed that the root and bark have medicinal value which can be used in a variety of applications and offers a range of benefits to users.
Which Claw Is Which?
There are two principal species of Chinese Cat’s Claw used in products today. Uncaria Tomentosa and Uncaria Rhynchophylla are both popular herbal remedies, although their histories and uses differ greatly.
Uncaria Rhynchophylla
Uncaria Rhynchophylla or ‘Gou Teng’ has been used in Traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine for generations. It is prescribed as a treatment for hypertension, convulsive disorders (epilepsy), and various head ailments such as headaches and dizziness. The plant’s main compounds consist of a variety of alkaloid compositions, most particularly the one named after it (Rhynchophylline), as well as a powerful alkaloid called GME (Geissoschizine Methyl Ether). The popular Japanese curative formula, Yokukansan, contains this component.
Uncaria Tomentosa
Almost always called Cat’s Claw, Uncaria Tomentosa is a South and Central American herb that is traditionally used there. A traditional source for it is the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and it is mostly used to support joint flexibility, as well as to benefit the digestive and immune systems.
